Not What It Seems

Last Friday the US stock markets were closed for Good Friday. The Labor Department, however, was at work and released the March non-farm payroll statistics and the household survey from which the unemployment rate is devised. The unemployment rate remained at a very high 9.7%. Prior to the release of the information the predictions for the non-farm payroll number ranged from plus 160,000 to plus 300,000. There were outlier predictions of as few as 40,000 to as high as 400,000 net new jobs.

The number came in at plus 162,000.

The media portrayed this as positive despite the fact that half of the 162,000 were government jobs and half of those were temporary census jobs. More importantly for market purposes the number came in at the low end of the range of predictions. So, was it a positive report? Yes, says the crowd-- and to prove it the market went up Monday when trading opened for the first time since the report was released.

But, consider a different point of view. Yes, the report could have been worse but it was, after all, at the low end of the predictions. Traders saw it as a signal that the Federal Reserve will not be raising interest rates soon. In other words, it gave the green light to a loose money policy for another six months at least. That cheap money not only finds its way into the stock market but also into commodities. For instance, crude oil jumped to nearly $90 a barrel yesterday.

Did the market rise on "good news"? I say the market would have rallied harder and with more volume if the jobs number had come in weaker, say under 100,000. If it had been plus 400,000 jobs I believe the market would have sold off. Traders would have factored in sooner interest rate hikes.
The rally yesterday was on weak volume. There's a lack of conviction in the markets. Everyone knows taxes are going up dramatically no later than January 1, 2011. Traders are trying to make what they can before the market corrects as it discounts that dismal future.

Opening Day 2010

TV sports channels constantly make predictions. Who will win? Who ya got? What are yer picks?Nobody can be truthful and say, "I have no idea."

In fact, not only must they predict who will win, they must do so in an emphatic way. "The Lobsters don't have a chance! They're goin' down this weekend to the Crabs!!"

It gets pretty tedious. But, apparently it's a path to media success. After all they do it on every sports program on TV and radio. Even the guys who still write for newspapers have to offer their "picks."
I blame CBS TV, The NFL, and Jimmy The Greek for this mess. But, as we say on Wall Street, "the trend is your friend." And... "don't fight the tape." Somehow that applies here. Maybe.
So, today we offer up our first (and almost certainly last) Dart's Baseball Season Predictions.

One of 'em who come runnin'-- every time

The big story in our little unincorporated community the past week has been the death of SC Highway Patrol trooper, Cpl. D. Kevin Cusack.

How big a story? Well, 700 people came to the neighborhood for his memorial service-- including the Governor.

York County Sheriff's deputies had taken over almost all the Highway Patrol's duties Monday so as many troopers as possible could attend the services. One of the deputies in the middle of the road was a guy with creases in his face deep as any furrow plowed by a mule in red clay soil, named Ronnie Wilburn.
"There's those who love the police, and there's those who don't," Wilburn said. "But I can tell you that it don't matter one way or another, when people need help, in a house or out here on the roads, we come runnin'. Cusack was one of 'em who come runnin' - every time."

The Rock Hill Herald tells it well.

Laser-like Focus

Yesterday King Obama signed into law the federal takeover of the student loan business. One lender has already announced the destruction of 2,500 private sector jobs. Estimates are that 31,000 jobs will be lost in the private sector due to this takeover by the feds.

So, it seems, the O administration really has pivoted to what Slow Joe famously called, "that three letter word: JOBS, JOBS, JOBS."

Things A CBS Viewer Never Knows

Last Wednesday we pointed out that no audio or video, despite the presence of hundreds of cameras, has shown up regarding those alleged racial slurs tossed on Capitol Hill. Another week has gone by and still nothing. The dinosaur media reports that it happened but there is zero evidence.

On the other hand the Tea Party Express bus was attacked by Harry Reid union thugs last Saturday. An allegation? Sure. Except this one has video backup right here.

And, by the way, many Democrats came out saying they were being threatened by evil Tea Party activists. But, the FBI has arrested just one citizen... for threatening the life of Republican Eric Cantor and his family.

Today? Not so much.

Rightfully Angry

"Should Americans feel ashamed for being angry that those who rule Washington thwarted the popular will? No more than colonial Americans at the trampling of their freedoms.
If the president and the leaders of his party in Congress think the American people are going to roll over and play dead after the biggest government power grab in history, they don't know this country."

Dealin' With The Disaster

Failure Was An Option After All

The new socialist medical plan will affect "every American" according to Emperor O. But not quite. The people who passed it carved out an exemption for themselves.

When people in the old Soviet Union were spending hours in line for a bread crust their rulers were partying it up on Vodka and caviar in the Kremlin.

Several days after the allegation that a protester tossed an epithet at some members of the Congressional Black Caucus Sunday nobody has produced video/ audio proof.

However, we know that Joe Biden tossed an F bomb at the signing ceremony for ObamaPelosiReidCare.
And, we hear that when vote 216 was recorded Sunday night Lord Obama yelled "Up yours, honkies!"

Lawsuit Filed

Florida, South Carolina, Nebraska, Texas, Michigan, Utah, Pennsylvania, Alabama, South Dakota, Louisiana, Idaho, Washington and Colorado joined together this afternoon to sue the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services, Treasury, and Labor.

The suit was filed in Pensacola, FL as soon as President Obama signed into law the offensive legislation that passed the House Sunday night.

Now Hiring: IRS Agents to Force Your Compliance

If you thought the "healthcare" debate was about better health, consider this simple fact...

The nearly 3,000 pages of new law doesn't call for the hiring of a single nurse or doctor. It does however require the hiring of 16,000- 18,000 new IRS agents to police your private transactions regarding health insurance.

It is this specific part of the new law that will be challenged by as many as two thirds of the states as soon as Lord Obama signs it into law. Is there any clearer sign that it's about increasing the power of the state over your life and not about better, more affordable medicine?

Happy 10th Anniversary

On March 10, 2000 the NASDAQ touched 5132.50 and President Clinton's approval numbers looked just as grand. What we knew only in retrospect was that the tech market had peaked and the Greenspan/Clinton crash had begun. The crash of March 2000 was the worst stock market crash since the famous one of 1929. It still is, no matter how much the current president tells us he inherited the worst economy since FDR.
The NASDAQ finally hit bottom in October 2002 when it was clear that President Bush's economic program would make it through Congress. That bottom was a NASDAQ of 1100. The Greenspan/Clinton crash had erased 79% of value from the most vibrant market the world has ever seen.

Yesterday the NASDAQ touched an 18 month high and stalled. It sold off on higher volume in the final hour before the close. But here's the sad truth: when it hit that 18 month high it was still 54% off the highs of 10 years ago.
Happy anniversary. It's been a long scary ride for ten years.

10 Seconds To Debunk

Moments ago I had the sound up on FBN where Stuart Varney was interviewing the President of the Vermont Senate about his state's move to shut down its nuclear power plant. The angle for Varney going into the interview was that it's odd that leftist VT is doing this at the same time that our leftist POTUS is pushing (supposedly) for more nuclear power generation in America.

The whole thing went about the way you would figure until Varney pressed the senator for the third or fourth time on where Vermont will get the electricity it needs if it shuts down this plant. The senator trotted out the usual suspects of "renewables" and seemed to really like the idea of solar power. He pointed to Germany's solar success as a reason that Vermont can get a large amount of electricity from the sun. I was still musing on the likelihood of Vermont Greens OK'ing having their land paved over with solar panels when the guy said that Germany currently gets 30% of its power from solar. That set off an alarm. 30% ? I would have guessed that Germany gets less than 5% from solar.

Ten seconds of research showed that Mr. Vermont was full of it. Germany currently gets just 1% of its electricity from the sun.

30% 1% Big difference.

Just a few years ago one would hear such horse crap and not be able to verify that it was totally made up. What a difference the Internet makes.

I expect that Pat Leahy and Bernie Sanders won't be the only dim bulbs in Vermont soon.

On The Field of Play

Yesterday our beloved Detroit Tigers opened up Spring Training play against other major league squads with a victory over Toronto. With MLB action underway again we tip our cap to Tigers Hall of Famer, Jim Bunning.

The first Tigers team I saw play at old Tiger Stadium was the 1961 squad. For that reason, and the fact they won over 100 games, they are still my favorite bunch of Tigers-- even over the World Champs of '68 and '84. Jim was a pitching star of that team with a 17-11 record (4th best in the AL that season). He posted a 3.19 ERA over 268 innings pitched. Nobody pitches 268 innings these days but Jim's total was 3rd highest in the AL in 1961. He struck out 194 in '61 and had a 1.311 WHIP, 4th best in the league. Yep, Jim was a star on that great 1961 club that also featured Rocky Colavito, batting champ Norm Cash, Yankee killer Frank Lary, and superstar Al Kaline.

So here's a warm attaboy to 1996 Hall of Fame inductee Jim Bunning. We wish you success in all things.

Sob, snort, sob.

On the Monday after The Super Bowl every year America has a grand debate about all the new commercials they saw between the football action. Today the nation is debating "which Democrat had the best sob story" during Lord O's "healthcare" dog 'n' pony show.

My money is on the crusty old gal from the House who told of a constituent who uses her dead sister's dentures. That's pretty hard to top. Still it was funny to listen to someone as erudite and clear-headed as, say, Paul Ryan give a great presentation only to be followed by one of the dozens of "my constituents are so poor they can't afford chewing gum" stories from the D's.

These are our elected representatives. For shame.
Sorry, sir. No flying monkeys. Will you accept this monkey that goes round and round in circles?

That Thing Really Stinks

The Examiner looks at the ignored 2,000 pound whale stinking in the middle of the room during the shameful Toyota hearings yesterday.

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

Aboard The DC Death Star

As the show trial plays out in DC we read this insightful piece from IBD.

That success seems to be why Toyota is being singled out for loud hearings by two congressional panels for its recent recall of nearly 650,000 cars. "While Honda recalled 636,000 models last month and Ford recalled more than 4 million vehicles last year, neither company was subjected to a Congressional Hearing," noted Americans for Tax Reform in a statement.
Small wonder then that a Toyota internal memo declared the current climate in Washington is "not industry friendly." That's a fact.

For starters, Toyota employs over 200,000 Americans across the spectrum of the auto industry. Parts plants, assembly plants, dealerships and repair shops all owe their existence to Toyota.
Already plants are shutting down and employees are being laid off, beyond all proportion to the recall problem, because of the congressional effort to drag Toyota through the mud.
City governments take in significant revenues from these operations. Don't think they won't feel the impact of these hearings.
Yet there's more than a whiff of Saul Alinsky's community organizing principles in this noisy government campaign against Toyota — "Pick a target, personalize it, freeze it, polarize it."

So now Congressional committees are hauling in Toyota's president Akio Toyoda all the way from Tokyo to testify. It's a sorry spectacle because Toyota has tried to be a good corporate citizen.
Recall that the first complaint against Toyota in the 1970s was that it imported cars to the U.S. instead of built them here.
So, Toyota built plants here, employing some 30,000 U.S. citizens directly. In the process, it also subcontracted to American companies — such as the one that makes the pedals in question now — all to make the "Buy American" crowd happy.

What he finds out is... it's too soon to tell, but it will be interesting.

On this day, February 12th, in 1999 the US Senate concluded its 21 day trial of President Bill Clinton. The vote on both counts before the Senate fell short of the 2/3rds majority needed to remove him from office.

He Said What?

Yesterday when I mused about Slow Joe being snowed in I had no idea he was actually suiting up to go on CNN and talk to the suspendered cadaver in residence.

But, oh my, what a jaw-dropping load of hoo haw did he leave behind in Larry's studio.

Did he really say: "I am very optimistic about--about Iraq. I mean, this could be one of the great achievements of this administration." ????

Why, yes. Yes he did. And he really did mean the Obama administration, not the prior one who deserves, lemme see, oh yeah, all of the credit!!!!

Just when ya think old Joe can't get any slower he goes and outdoes himself again.

Dinner With Slow Joe and The Mrs.

Sunny, clear, 40 degrees and windy-er than Sheecargo today. They keep showing pictures of WashDC on the TV insert on my trading screen. I lurve the fact that they have called a 3rd straight snow day at the US Capitol bldg. The public is never safe any day that congress is in session so-- we're good!

But, with all that snow, I can't stop imagining Slow Joe Biden trapped in his house and unable to get out of his drifted-in driveway. You know Lord Zero sure isn't going to send a plow over to free him. In fact, when Joey called in to tell the White House he couldn't get out Herr Gibbells pranked him and told him the storm had knocked the wires down on the cell phones and they couldn't hear him. He bought it.

So, stuck in his house with just his own self and the lovely Dr. Biden, what do ya suppose they chow down on? I'm guessing microwave popcorn, hot pockets, and a six of Bud Lite.

What's Wrong With That Guy?

Friday we pointed to the story that the guy who records those "Osama bin Laden" tapes has gone back to knockin' the Bush administration for not stopping Global Climate Change (TM). We love that story. If Vince Flynn put that in one of his Mitch Rapp books his editor would probably send the galley proof back with "implausible" blue penciled in the margin.

But equally out-to-lunch is our senior Senator, Lindsey Graham. So desperate is Graham to have bipartisanship reign supreme in DC that he's still promoting the "energy" bill he's slopping together with Kerry and Lieberman. Warmism has always been a hoax. But I will allow that there were lots of people duped and not all of them were dumb-as-a-box-of-rocks. You would think now though, post-Climategate, that even clowns like Lindsey G. would quietly slink away from this fraud. Instead we get this:

"We tried immigration. It's hard. And we failed. We tried Social Security. It's hard. And we failed. We tried health care. It's really hard. And it looks like we're going to have to start over again," Graham somberly told a luncheon audience of energy and climate advocates on the Hill. "On the energy, climate change front, I don't want to add that to the list. There is no reason in my mind that the Republican Party and the Democratic Party can't come together."

So it doesn't matter how bad it is as legislation... how much damage it will do... that it's based on junk science promoted shamelessly by hucksters in lab coats... what matters is that the US Congress gets a "win".

When I hear "bipartisan" I grab for my wallet. If there had been even one Republican to sign on to Obamacare we would have gotten a $2 Trillion plus monstrosity. That's how expensive bipartisanship can be. As the wise man said, "The public is never safe any day Congress is in session."
